Years ago, my husband bought me a study bible after I admired his and asked him to order me one of the same. When it arrived, tulips bloomed across the cover with the words “Women Mentoring Women Through the Scriptures” printed beneath them in careful gold letters. He hadn’t realized that the particular version he purchased for me was specifically for women, and I remember feeling disappointed that he’d bought me a bible for church ladies. I wanted his exact version, but with limited funds and a non-existent internet, I had to make the most of the bible I held in my hands.
As I thumbed through its tissue-thin pages, I discovered the words of women like myself, wrestling with their faith, struggling to find their place in God’s kingdom. Devotions, prayers, and short biographies of influential women of faith filled this study bible–all written by women for women. As I’ve spent time in God’s word throughout the years, these writers became companions on my journey of faith.
Every time I discovered another study page slipped between scripture, I stared at the name of the writer, sometimes tracing the violet script with my finger, wondering who she was and how her words happened to find their way into my hands. This was long before the internet and long before I realized my own dreams of becoming a writer. Their work sparked a curiosity in me, and a desire beneath all desires began to form.
Before my head understood or could articulate this desire, the deepest part of me began to dream of someday seeing my words in a women’s study bible too. I had no idea that decades later, this half-formed desire would come true. I’m honored to contribute a few of my words alongside 100+ writers in the new (in)courage Devotional Bible for women. It is such a joy to imagine other women, like my younger self, growing in faith alongside all of these lovely women writers.
